Effluent Treatment Upgrade
CityForest Corp.

Mill capacity doubled with no increase in effluent

CityForest embarked on a major plant expansion that added a new paper machine and deink plant, effectively doubling the mill's capacity and substantially increasing the BOD loading at its effluent treatment plant. By upgrading the activated sludge treatment (AST) plant, CityForest was able to work within the constraints of its existing permit, avoiding costly delays.

As part of the upgrade, CityForest decided to improve the effluent treatment plant's operation and maintainability. The resulting project included:

  • increasing the detention time of the aeration basin
  • increasing the aeration capacity of the AST
  • providing maintenance facilities such as winches and docks
  • adding an adjustable weir for level and detention time control
  • adding a gravity table ahead of the belt press

Dick Engineering's involvement included:

  • feasibility studies
  • detailed engineering
  • commissioning and startup
