Biosolids Utilization Program
Strathcona Paper Company*

The Strathcona Paper Company produces coated folding boxboard grades at its mill in Napanee, ON.

While preparing designs for the mill's new effluent treatment system, Dick Engineering worked with Strathcona to develop a program to dispose of the wasted biological material from the new effluent treatment.

The resulting program utilized the biological material, as well as rejected fibers from the boxboard making process, to condition the soil for local agricultural properties. This program provides local farmers with a beneficial soil additive for their fields while diverting otherwise wasted materials from local landfills.

Dick Engineering provided the following services:

  • public consultation including a public open house and presentations to local council
  • pre-submission consultation with various provincial Ministries including Environment and Energy, Agricultural Food and Rural Affairs, and Natural Resources
  • preparation and submission of an application to permit a transfer station in Strathcona’s landfill site (MOEE)
  • submission of applications for two separate organic soil conditioning sites (MOEE)
Project Statistics
Biosolids production 2.3 dry mt/d (2.5 dry t/d)
Transfer station capacity 20,000 m2 (210,000 ft2)
Application rate 16 t/ha yr (7.1 t/acre yr)
Total application area 57.5 ha (139 acre)
