Plant Expansion
Canada Colors and Chemicals Ltd.

The Canada Colors and Chemicals Ltd. (CCC) plant located in Colborne provides the plastic industry with specialty additives. The operation includes two major processes: mixing and extruding.

In order to meet their strategic goals for sales and quality, CCC wanted to:

  • increase the number of production lines
  • optimize the material flow
  • expand the facility

Dick Engineering assisted Canada Colors and Chemical Ltd. with their justification for the project. This work consisted of the preparation of a conceptual design and a capital cost estimate which formed part of a comprehensive presentation to the approval committee.

Highlights of the design:

  • the entire process from raw materials receiving to finished goods shipping was rationalized and streamlined
  • the materials handling between mixing and pelletizing was optimized
  • alternative process flow concepts (horizontal, vertical or combined) were developed; two of these alternatives are shown below
  • the equipment was layed out using 3-D modeling such that the approval committee could “walk through” each alternative arrangement
  • the building envelope requirements were determined
