Steam Plant Expansion
Aventis Pasteur Ltd., Connaught Campus

Aventis Pasteur (formerly Connaught Laboratories) is one of the largest vaccine producers in North America. These vaccines are produced using a batch process to ferment a biological culture under very stringent temperature control. This fermentation process requires continuous heating and/or cooling -- a brief heating system interruption can cause significant product waste.

A central steam plant supplies the entire campus with steam (for process and building heat) by means of an extensive piping network. In order to avoid downtime due to natural gas curtailment or maintenance of the existing boiler, Aventis needed to expand the central steam plant and install a stand-by steam boiler equipped with a dual fuel burner.

Dick Engineering’s scope included:

  • piping and flow diagrams of the existing steam plant
  • detailed mechanical, electrical and structural engineering for the new boiler
  • overall project management
  • contract administration during construction
