Glycol System Upgrade
Labatt Breweries of Canada

Based on a long history of involvement with the brewing industry (with such brands as: Molson, Amstel, Brick, Lakeport, Miller, Pacific, Sleeman), Dick Engineering was retained by Labatt Breweries (www.Labatt.com) to upgrade the existing ammonia refrigeration system and centralize the glycol cooling systems. As always, Dick Engineering signed a secrecy agreement to protect Labatt’s trade secrets.

The new glycol system has the following features:

  • adequately sized for the entire glycol cooling load of the plant with provision for future expansion
  • implemented in stages without disturbing normal plant operations
  • two liquid ammonia-to-glycol, welded plate and frame heat exchangers and surge drums, skid mounted
  • a central suction accumulator with provision for ammonia compressor segregation
  • three vertical circulating pumps (87% efficiency) with variable frequency drives controlled by discharge pressure
  • ammonia and glycol piping and valves

Dick Engineering’s scope included:

  • site survey and documentation of the existing glycol piping system
  • detailed engineering
  • procurement of major equipment
  • tendering
  • partial review during construction
