Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), headquartered in Toronto, is a leading manufacturer of ammonium nitrate (AN), with plants throughout North America, Europe and Australia. A joint venture between ICI and Agro Nitrogenados, Pajaritos, Mexico launched a project to upgrade an existing AN manufacturing facility (shown at left) to produce an industrial (explosive) grade of AN.

As prime engineering partner within a consortium of consulting firms, Dick Engineering Inc. provided:

  • project definition and conceptual design
  • detailed engineering
  • technical specifications and bid analysis
  • cost estimating and scheduling
  • hazard and operability (HAZOP) review
  • construction management

Highlights of Dick Engineering’s scope of work:

  • process air system for the intricate prilling and drying operations that require a precise control of the moisture content
  • cooling and dehumidification of process air using flooded ammonia refrigeration
  • dust collection system, connected to an existing wet scrubber, to capture, contain and remove fugitive particles at product tranfer points
  • upgrading of a proprietary prilling head and vibration control system to ensure consistent product quality
  • joint venture revenue metering system for utilities shared between facilities
