Effluent Treatment System
Strathcona Paper Company

The Strathcona Paper Company is located in Napanee, Ontario on the Napanee River. It produces clay-coated folding boxboard grades. While the mill had successfully operated using an aerated stabilization basin (ASB) effluent treatment system, new government regulations required that the system be upgraded.

Dick Engineering developed several upgrade schemes. Strathcona eventually selected an activated sludge treatment (AST) system that re-used the existing ASB to the greatest possible extent.

The new treatment plant consisted of:

  • settling pond
  • aeration system
  • secondary clarifier
  • polishing ponds
  • effluent press of solid residuals
  • land spreading program

Dick Engineering's scope included:

  • procurement of major equipment
  • detailed engineering design
  • permitting
  • full-time, on-site review during construction
